OEM Auto Oxygen Sensors

Your vehicle's oxygen sensors play an important role when it comes to performance. Also called lambda sensors, they measure the oxygen levels in the vehicle's exhaust gases. That information is then passed along to an engine control unit (ECU). The ECU adjusts levels as needed to ensure that your engine runs its best.

Your vehicle has at least two oxygen sensors, if not four. One is located in front of the catalytic converter, and known as the upstream sensor. The other(s) can be found in the exhaust manifolds, and are referred to as(downstream sensors.

The upstream sensor monitors how efficiently your engine combusts the air-and-fuel mix. That data is relayed to the ECU, which determines the optimal mix needed. An ECU also uses the readings from the downstream sensor(s) and compares them to the upstream sensor readings to verify consistency. If the readings don't match, a diagnostic error code may pop up.

How to Spot Oxygen Sensor Problems

If your oxygen sensors go bad, the ECU is forced to guess the ideal air-to-fuel ratio. That's not good. Signs of failure include:

  • The smell of rotten eggs in the air
  • Poorer fuel efficiency
  • The engine idles rougher than usual
  • You have emissions issues
  • The "Check Engine" dash light comes on
