OEM Auto Brakes

Your vehicle has one of two braking systems. One employs disc brakes, while the other uses drum brakes. Both employ master brake cylinders, pistons, lines, and hoses, and send brake fluid from the master brake cylinder through the hoses and lines when you apply pressure to the brake pedal.

The Two Types of OEM Brake Systems

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes are common in most modern vehicles. They have brake calipers that clamp down onto brake rotors when the fluid pressure level builds up. That creates the resistance needed to slow your tires. Since the calipers and rotors are both made of metal, their contact is cushioned by brake pads that attach to the calipers.

Drum Brakes

Drum brakes, on the other hand, are most often found on heavy-duty trucks these days. They consist of brake drums and brake shoes. The fluid forces the drum and the shoe to close together to produce that resistance.

How to Spot Faulty Brakes

Most signs of failing brakes are easy to spot, fortunately. They include:

  • The brakes feel like they're shuddering when they engage
  • The brake pedal feels soft or squishy
  • Your vehicle pulls to one side when you brake
  • You hear weird noises, including grinding, when you brake
  • Your ABS or brake warning dash light comes on
