OEM Auto Brake Drums

The brake drums are one component in a type of automotive braking system. In fact, they're the part the system is named for. How they operate is simple. You press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder send hydraulic brake fluid through your Honda vehicle's brake lines and hoses. That fluid builds until the pressure forces brake shoes to fasten to the brake drums. That results in the friction needed to slow, and eventually stop, the rotation of your vehicle's wheels.

Types of Brake Drums

There are four types of brake drum systems these days.

Regular Brake Drums

In this system, the brake shoes press on the drum's inner surface.

Clasp Brake Drums

This type has the shoes press on the outside of the drum.

Pinch Brake Drums

The two shoes compress -- or pinch -- the brake drum between them in this system.

Band Brake Drum

With this kind, a flexible belt wraps around the drum -- eliminating the brake shoes from the situation completely.

Signs of Faulty Brake Drums

Over time, however, your brake drums can start to go bad. If you hear strange noises when you're braking, can't set your parking brake, or feel odd vibrations or bouncing in the brake pedal under the sole of your foot, chances are you have at least one brake drum that needs replacing. Fail to do so, quickly, and you're putting your safety at risk.
