OEM Auto Belts

The many moving parts on your car, SUV, pickup, or van depend on belts to help them move. The more parts and systems your vehicle features, the more factory-installed belts you'll find.

The Different Types of Belts

First, you have a timing belt. This is a notched belt that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. It moves them in sync and prevents other parts from hitting them. If it breaks, your engine will stop running immediately. Depending on your model, your vehicle may feature a timing chain instead of a timing belt.

There are two other kinds of belts -- serpentine belts and drive belts. Serpentine belts work with the crank pulley, idler pulley, and tensioner to run parts like the power steering and alternator. Drive belts are driven by the crank pulley and help move the water pump, radiator fan, and more. If either of these belts break, you'll have a window of time where you can fix the problem before things get too bad.

When You Should Replace Your Belts

Sadly, belts don't last forever. Check your owner's manual for your recommended maintenance schedule. Typically, timing belts should be changed every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Check yours for damage regularly. A timing chain, on the other hand, can last the engine's entire lifespan.

Serpentine belts should be inspected for cracks and shallow grooves at about 60,000 miles and replaced by 90,000 miles of service. Conduct routine inspections to test the tension of your drive belts. If they're too tight, loosen them. If they're too loose, try to tighten them. If they can’t be properly adjusted or have cracks or broken pieces of rubber, replace them as soon as possible.
